Created in the beginning of this century, the DocIsland
project is a tightly-nit group of I.T. professionals that
share many things in common such as their interest in
computers and Open Source software.
The project begun when some of the current members, who
were working at that time at the same company, thought of
putting up together something to spread I.T. knowledge
around the World and help other people get more
knowledgeable on different I.T. topics such as networking
and security. A name for the project was needed and
DocIsland was chosen to represent a (virtual)
Island of (free)
Documents.
After some time, we figured out that the goals we were
trying to achieve demanded lot of time, energy, and strong
team work. For instance, we needed to write a CMS (Content
Management System) from scratch since those who were
available at that time were lacking necessary features that
would make publishing articles a simple task. It didn't go
far beyond the occasional brainstorming sessions. And as
your typical geek will do, we got in several directions
burning energy but without producing any solid results. At
a given point in time, we started having better clues about
where we wanted to go with this and what we wanted to
achieve. But destiny, among other things, decided
otherwise. The company we were working for started going
awry and some of the members moved. And some of us started
grasping what Real Life(tm) means in terms of
time-consumption. So we lacked the necessary ingredients
that would make our ideas a reality.
Truth is, we -as a project/team- didn't produce anything
since then. However, friendship among us is still going
very strong and we meet each other quite frequently.
DocIsland is now mainly a "socializing" project.
But the story doesn't end here. Some members decided to
actually produce something, in the true spirit of the
initial goals of DocIsland. They started, individually,
helping other I.T. users on public, Open Source related,
mailing lists and IRC channels. Some also have made
presentations and written articles in the name of
DocIsland.
DocIsland started with 5 persons. Since then, other persons
joined us. We all live and work in France (Paris, Nice, and
